Fly Ash Processing Plant (SMZ)
 Older coal-fired power plants produce high-grade fly ash. However, since these plants are gradually being decommissioned, the quantity of this fly ash available on the market is decreasing. More recent coal-fired power plants have low-NOx burners in their boilers, and use lower firing temperatures. This is in the best interests of the environment, but it does have an adverse effect on the quality of fly ash produced. Therefore, on the Rotterdam Maasvlakte, Vliegasunie (Dutch fly ash Corporation) built the SMZ plant to upgrade pulverized coal fly ash into a high-grade construction raw material.
The products
Of the various products that SMZ supplies, the screening plant produces two: Betonas® and fly ash with an increased carbon content. The most valuable product is Betonas®: a certified construction raw material which complies with all specifications of European (NEN-EN 450), British (BS 3892) as well as American (ASTM C618) standards for the application of coal fly ash in concrete and mortar. Coal fly ash with an increased carbon content (10-20%) in addition to aluminum and silicon oxides has a considerable caloric value. It is coarser than Betonas®, and as a construction raw material is suitable for those processes that require the addition of raw materials as well as heat. In principle, such coarse coal fly ash can again provide fuel for the power plant.
Tumbler screening machines
 Based on the above-mentioned product requirements and commissioned by Vliegasunie, DUOS developed a feeding and separation technology for coal fly ash. This has led to the construction of a screening plant as part of SMZ. The heart of the screening plant consists of so-called tumbler screening machines. They remove the coarse fraction from the coal fly ash and reduce the carbon content. There is much international interest in this innovative technology, with which coal fly ash of varying quality can be upgraded to Betonas® quality.
